Target Information
Adipose tissue acts as a regulated energy reserve in animals. Adipocytes produce and secrete various physiologically important proteins such as LPL, leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin (also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor, ADSF, or FIZZ3) is a cytokine secreted specifically by adipocytes and plays key paracrine roles, with suggested involvement in type 2 diabetes.
Studies show that resistin levels are elevated in obese, diabetic mice, antagonizing insulin action. Resistin induces insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in mice. Its gene expression requires C/EBP alpha, and coactivators CBP and p300 acetylate histones at the resistin promoter to activate transcription.
PPAR gamma and RXR ligands have been shown to downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
