Target Information
This gene encodes a homodimeric glycoprotein that hydrolyzes terminal alpha-galactosyl moieties from glycolipids and glycoproteins. The enzyme primarily hydrolyzes ceramide trihexoside and catalyzes the hydrolysis of melibiose into galactose and glucose. Mutations in this gene can impair enzyme synthesis, processing, and stability, leading to Fabry disease—a rare lysosomal storage disorder resulting from defective catabolism of alpha-D-galactosyl glycolipid moieties.
