Target Information
The CDKN2A gene produces several transcript variants differing in their first exons. At least three alternatively spliced variants encode distinct proteins, two of which act as inhibitors of CDK4 kinase. Another variant encodes the ARF protein, which stabilizes the tumor suppressor p53 by binding and sequestering MDM2, preventing p53 degradation. Despite structural and functional differences, both CDK inhibitor isoforms and the ARF product contribute to G1 cell cycle control. Mutations or deletions in this gene are common in many tumors, underscoring its role as a critical tumor suppressor gene.
