Target Information
Nucleocytoplasmic transport is a signal- and energy-dependent process occurring through nuclear pore complexes in the nuclear envelope. Proteins containing a nuclear localization signal (NLS) require the import receptor complex composed of importin alpha and beta subunits (karyopherins). Importin alpha binds the NLS-containing cargo, while importin beta mediates docking at the nuclear pore. In the presence of nucleoside triphosphates and Ran GTPase, the complex translocates into the nucleus, where importin subunits dissociate. Importin alpha delivers the cargo into the nucleoplasm, and importin beta remains at the pore. Interactions between importin beta and nucleoporins' FG repeats are essential for translocation. The encoded protein is a member of the importin beta family.
