Target Information
Desmin (approximately 53 kDa) exhibits a high degree of tissue specificity, being predominantly expressed in muscle cells (cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle). Its expression is stage- and tissue-specific, induced during terminal skeletal muscle differentiation.
In skeletal and cardiac muscle cells, desmin localizes to the Z-disk and intercalated disk regions. In smooth muscle, expression is more heterogeneous. Coexpression of vimentin and desmin has been observed in tumors derived from muscle tissue, such as rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas.
During myocardial dysfunction, dramatic changes in desmin distribution have been observed.
