EPHA5 belongs to the ephrin receptor subfamily of the protein tyrosine kinase family. EPH and EPH-related receptors are implicated in developmental processes, particularly in the nervous system.
Protein kinases transfer phosphate groups from donors such as ATP onto substrate proteins, mediating signal transduction in eukaryotic cells. This regulates metabolism, transcription, cell cycle progression, cytoskeletal rearrangement, cell movement, apoptosis, and differentiation.
The tyrosine kinase (TK) group primarily regulates cell-cell interactions including differentiation, adhesion, motility, and death. Approximately 90 TK genes are known: 58 are receptor protein TKs (e.g., EGFR, EPH, FGFR, PDGFR, TRK, VEGFR) and 32 are cytosolic TKs (e.g., ABL, FAK, JAK, SRC).
