Target Information
Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) family proteins play critical roles in nuclear events requiring structural changes of chromosomes, such as mitotic chromosome organization, DNA recombination and repair, and global transcriptional repression. These chromo proteins are conserved in eukaryotes and are associated with mitotic chromosome segregation defects, indicating a critical role in chromosome dynamics.
SMC1 and SMC3 form a heterodimeric complex essential for metaphase progression and sister chromatid cohesion. Mutations in this gene can lead to Cornelia de Lange syndrome 2.
