Target Information
The oxytocin receptor (OXTR) belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor family. Its activity is mediated by G proteins which activate a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. The receptor is composed of 389 amino acids and has a molecular weight of approximately 43 kDa.
The oxytocin-oxytocin receptor system plays a crucial role in uterine contractions during parturition and milk ejection. Oxytocin receptors are expressed by myoepithelial cells of the mammary gland, and in the myometrium and endometrium of the uterus at the end of pregnancy. Additionally, oxytocin receptors are present in the central nervous system, mediating behaviors such as maternal bonding, social recognition, sexual and aggressive behaviors, and stress and anxiety responses.
