Target Information
PHAX is a phosphoprotein adapter involved in XPO1-mediated U snRNA export from the nucleus. It bridges the cap binding complex (CBC)-bound snRNA and the GTPase Ran in its active GTP-bound form together with export receptor XPO1. Phosphorylation in the nucleus is required for U snRNA export complex assembly and export, while dephosphorylation in the cytoplasm causes export complex disassembly. PHAX is recycled back to the nucleus via the importin alpha/beta heterodimeric import receptor. It binds strongly to m7G-capped U1 and U5 snRNAs, and also plays a role in the biogenesis and transport of U3 snoRNA and other small nucleolar RNAs. Additionally, it binds to telomerase RNA.
