Target Information
Glutathione peroxidase catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, organic hydroperoxide, and lipid peroxides by reduced glutathione, protecting cells from oxidative damage. Human plasma glutathione peroxidase is a selenium-containing enzyme, where the UGA codon is translated into selenocysteine. Alternative splicing and transcription initiation lead to the production of proteins localized to the nucleus, mitochondrion, and cytoplasm in rats. In humans, experimental evidence supports alternative splicing, though mitochondrial and nuclear transit peptide cleavage sites need further verification.
