Target Information
Immunity-related GTPases (IRG), also known as p47 GTPases, are a family of GTPase proteins found in vertebrates that play critical roles in mediating innate resistance to intracellular pathogens. IRG genes are present in mammals and lower species including mice, rats, zebrafish, and humans.
In humans, only two IRG genes have been identified:
- IRGC: Encodes a full-length IRG protein, constitutively expressed in testis.
- IRGM: Encodes a truncated protein, constitutively expressed in cultured cells including macrophage lines.
Unlike mouse IRG genes, human IRGC and IRGM are not controlled by interferons (IFNs), suggesting that the IRG-mediated host resistance mechanism in mice may be absent in humans.
