- Specificity: Human Carbonic Anhydrase VIII (CA8)
Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene was initially named CA-related protein due to sequence similarity with other known carbonic anhydrase genes. However, it lacks enzymatic carbonic anhydrase activity (the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide). Despite this, it retains the carbonic anhydrase designation based on its sequence identity to other family members. The absence of CA8 transcription in the cerebellum of the lurcher mutant mouse, which exhibits a neurological defect, suggests an important role for this acatalytic form.
