Enteroviruses, such as enterovirus 71, belong to the picornavirus family (pico [small] + RNA [ribonucleic acid] + virus). Picornaviruses are among the smallest and simplest RNA-containing viruses known. The RNA for many enteroviruses has been cloned and fully sequenced, typically about 7400 nucleotides in length with identical genomic organization. The human alimentary tract is the main site of enterovirus replication, and these viruses were first isolated from enteric specimens.

Enteroviruses are responsible for diseases such as paralytic poliomyelitis, aseptic meningitis-encephalitis, myocarditis, pleurodynia, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, conjunctivitis, and other syndromes affecting extra-intestinal organs. There are 67 identified enterovirus types: three polioviruses, twenty-three coxsackieviruses A, six coxsackieviruses B, thirty-one echoviruses, and four other enteroviruses.
