Target Information
Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is critical for development, tissue turnover, and tumor formation. A protein homologous to apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), designated AIFL (also known as AIFM3), has been cloned.
AIFM3 is ubiquitously expressed and localized to the inner mitochondrial membrane. Unlike AIF, AIFM3 does not translocate to the nucleus upon apoptosis induction. Overexpression of AIFM3 induces cytochrome c release, caspase 3 cleavage, and apoptosis through caspase activation. Multiple isoforms of AIFM3 are known.
