Target Information
Peroxisomal multifunctional enzyme type 2 is a protein encoded by the HSD17B4 gene in humans. This bifunctional enzyme participates in the peroxisomal beta-oxidation pathway of fatty acids and catalyzes the formation of 3-ketoacyl-CoA intermediates from both straight-chain and 2-methyl-branched-chain fatty acids.
Defects in this gene that impair peroxisomal fatty acid beta-oxidation activity cause D-bifunctional protein deficiency (DBPD).
A pseudogene is located on chromosome 8, and several alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
