Target Information
DNA-binding protein SATB2 binds to DNA at nuclear matrix- or scaffold-associated regions and recognizes the sugar-phosphate structure of double-stranded DNA.
SATB2 functions as a transcription factor controlling nuclear gene expression by binding to matrix attachment regions (MARs) of DNA, inducing local chromatin-loop remodeling, and acting as a docking site for chromatin remodeling enzymes.
It recruits corepressors (HDACs) or coactivators (HATs) directly to promoters and enhancers.
SATB2 is essential for initiating upper-layer neuron (UL1) genetic programs and repressing deep-layer (DL) and UL2-specific genes, likely through modulation of BCL11B expression.
It serves as a repressor of Ctip2 and a regulator of corticocortical connections in the developing cerebral cortex.
Mutations in SATB2 are associated with cleft palate isolated (CPI).
