Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the pyridine nucleotide oxidoreductase family. The encoded protein reduces thioredoxins and other substrates, playing a critical role in selenium metabolism and protection against oxidative stress. The enzyme functions as a homodimer using FAD as a cofactor. Each subunit includes a selenocysteine (Sec) residue essential for catalytic activity, encoded by the UGA codon, which typically signals translation termination. The 3′ UTR contains a SECIS element that allows UGA to be recognized as a Sec codon. Alternative splicing produces several transcript variants encoding the same or different isoforms.
