Target Information
This gene encodes an opioid receptor, a member of the 7 transmembrane-spanning G protein-coupled receptor family. It functions as a receptor for endogenous ligands and synthetic opioids. Ligand binding inhibits adenylate cyclase activity and neurotransmitter release. This receptor is involved in pain perception and mediates hypolocomotor, analgesic, and aversive actions of synthetic opioids. Variations in this gene have been linked to alcohol dependence and opiate addiction. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms exist. Recent studies suggest translational readthrough producing an additional C-terminally extended isoform.
