SALL4 단백질은 인간 20번 염색체에 위치한 Sall4 유전자에 의해 암호화되며, Spalt-like 단백질 패밀리에 속합니다.
이 단백질은 체세포 줄기세포 유지에 중요한 역할을 하며, 줄기세포 바이오마커로 연구되고 있습니다.
SALL4는 아연 손가락(zinc finger) 전사인자로, Oct4 및 Sox2와 상호작용하고 Nanog와 복합체를 형성하여 배아줄기세포(ESCs)의 다능성을 유지합니다.
또한, 종양 발생 및 암 바이오마커로서의 기능이 연구되고 있으며, 보고된 표적 유전자는 p53, Bmi-1, Bcl2, XIAP 등이 있습니다.
