Target Information
Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) functions as a cell surface kinesin I membrane receptor, mediating axonal transport of beta-secretase and presenilin 1. APP is crucial for neurite growth, neuronal adhesion, and axonogenesis. It is a 100–140 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein with multiple isoforms from alternative splicing. Proteolytic cleavage by beta- and gamma-secretases generates beta amyloid, the main component of senile plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Abnormal APP regulation is associated with Down’s syndrome, familial Alzheimer’s disease, and cerebral hemorrhage.
