Target Information
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis through activation of the c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase signaling cascade. It is secreted by mesenchymal cells and acts as a multifunctional cytokine on epithelial cells. HGF stimulates mitogenesis, cell motility, and matrix invasion, playing central roles in angiogenesis, tumorigenesis, and tissue regeneration. The inactive single-chain precursor is cleaved into a 69-kDa alpha-chain and a 34-kDa beta-chain, linked by a disulfide bond to form the active heterodimeric molecule. Although it belongs to the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases, it has no detectable protease activity. Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms.
