Target Information
Hemidesmosomes are structures that link the basal lamina to the intermediate filament cytoskeleton. A key functional component is the integrin beta-4 subunit (ITGB4), containing two fibronectin type III domains. The protein encoded by this gene binds to ITGB4 and may help link it to the intermediate filament cytoskeleton. This insoluble protein is found in both the nucleus and cytoplasm and functions as a translation initiation factor, preventing the association of the 40S and 60S ribosomal subunits. Multiple transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been identified.
