Target Information
Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fibers in eukaryotes. Two molecules of each core histone (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4) form an octamer around which ~146 bp of DNA is wrapped, forming nucleosomes.
The linker histone H1 interacts with linker DNA between nucleosomes to compact chromatin into higher-order structures.
The H4 gene is intronless, encodes a histone H4 family member, and is located in the large histone gene cluster on chromosome 6. Its transcripts lack polyA tails and contain a palindromic termination element.
