Target Information
IL12B (IL-12 p40) encodes a subunit of interleukin 12, a cytokine acting on T and natural killer cells with diverse biological activities.
Interleukin 12 is a disulfide-linked heterodimer composed of the 40 kDa subunit (encoded by IL12B) and a 35 kDa subunit (encoded by IL12A).
It is expressed by activated macrophages and plays a key role in Th1 cell development and maintenance of memory/effector Th1 populations for long-term protection against intracellular pathogens.
Overexpression has been observed in the central nervous system of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), suggesting involvement in disease pathogenesis.
Promoter polymorphisms of IL12B have also been associated with the severity of atopic and non-atopic asthma in children.
