DjC9 (DnaJ subfamily C member 9) belongs to the Hsp40 (heat shock protein 40) family of proteins that function as co-chaperones to Hsp70.
Hsp40 proteins are classified into 3 main subfamilies (A, B, and C), defined by the presence of specific domains including:
- Highly conserved alpha-helical N-terminal J-domain
- Glycine/phenylalanine-rich region
- Cysteine-rich region
- C-terminal beta-sheet containing domain
DjC9 is part of subfamily C that contains only the J-domain. It interacts with HSP70 through this J-domain and activates its ATPase activity.
