Target Information

Prostaglandins are produced by the metabolism of arachidonic acid. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is one of the five physiologically significant prostanoids. Its wide spectrum of physiologic and pharmacologic effects is mediated through binding to Prostaglandin E2 receptors (EP1, EP2, EP3, and EP4). These receptors influence immune, endocrine, cardiovascular, renal, and reproductive systems, as well as smooth muscle activity.

PGE2 is abundant in the brain, where it plays roles in neural functions and inflammation. EP2 receptors are 358 amino acid G-protein coupled receptors that stimulate adenylyl cyclase via Gs coupling and do not undergo PGE2-induced internalization. EP2 receptors are involved in smooth muscle contraction and relaxation, and are mainly localized in lung and placental tissues.
