Target Information
HAAO (3-Hydroxyanthranilate 3,4-dioxygenase) is a monomeric cytosolic protein belonging to the family of intramolecular dioxygenases containing non-heme ferrous iron. It is widely distributed in peripheral organs such as the liver and kidney, and present in low amounts in the central nervous system.
This enzyme participates in tryptophan metabolism and employs one cofactor, iron. HAAO catalyzes the synthesis of quinolinic acid (QUIN) from 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid. QUIN acts as an excitotoxin by activating glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. Elevated cerebral levels of QUIN may contribute to neurological and inflammatory disorders. HAAO has been implicated in conditions associated with altered tissue levels of QUIN, and recent studies suggest that HAAO may serve as a biomarker for detecting ovarian cancer.
