SLC34A3 encodes a member of the SLC34A transporter family, primarily expressed in the kidney.
It mediates phosphate transport into cells via sodium cotransport in the renal brush border membrane and helps maintain inorganic phosphate balance.
Mutations in this gene are linked to hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets with hypercalciuria.
Alternative splicing variants differing in the 5' UTR have been identified.
