Target Information
Transcriptional repressor that binds to neuron-restrictive silencer element (NRSE) and represses neuronal gene transcription in non-neuronal cells. It restricts the expression of neuronal genes by associating with corepressors mSin3 and CoREST, which recruit histone deacetylase to REST-regulated promoters. REST mediates repression by recruiting the BHC complex at RE1/NRSE sites, leading to histone deacetylation and demethylation, thereby modifying chromatin structure.
