Target Information

The KIR (inwardly rectifying potassium channel) family allows potassium influx preferentially over efflux.
Kir4.1 (also known as Kir1.2) is highly expressed in brain tissue—glial cells, astrocytes, and cortical neurons—and plays a crucial role in myelination via oligodendrocytes.
Human KIR4.1 gene maps to chromosome 1.
Kir4.2 (Kir1.3) is expressed in kidney, lung, heart, thymus, and thyroid during development and may be involved in Down syndrome pathogenesis (chromosome 21).
Kir5.1 forms functional channels only when coexpressed with Kir4.1 or Kir4.2 in kidney and pancreas.
