Target Information

GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) is a class III intermediate filament protein, specifically expressed in astrocytes and certain astroglia of the central nervous system. It is also found in satellite cells of peripheral ganglia and non-myelinating Schwann cells. Neural stem cells strongly express GFAP, making it a useful marker for astrocytic cells. GFAP expression is common in various brain tumors derived from astrocytic cells, and it can also be detected in lens epithelium, Kupffer cells, salivary tumor cells, and erythrocytes. Mutations in GFAP cause Alexander disease, a rare astrocyte disorder. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
