Target Information
Nearly all mucosal surfaces are protected by mucin transmembrane glycoproteins, from bronchioles to corneas to reproductive tracts. Mucin 4 (MUC4) is membrane-bound and plays a key role in protection and lubrication. MUC4 expression is aberrant in many carcinomas and sarcomas, including fibromyxoid sarcoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical staining for MUC4 has been discussed as a potential biomarker for detection of these cancers.
MUC4 is also implicated in certain regional diseases such as Taiwanese infertility, endometriosis, and gallstone formation in Chinese men. Its dysfunction is associated with metastatic cancer invasions due to its critical role in mucosal surface protection.
