Target Information
The Slc22 family of organic anion and cation transporters (OATs, OCTs, OCTNs) are transmembrane proteins expressed predominantly in kidney and liver. Each contains 12 predicted alpha-helical transmembrane domains and one large extracellular loop between TMDs 1 and 2.
These transporters function as uniporters, anion exchangers, or Na(+)/l-carnitine cotransporters, contributing to absorption and excretion of drugs, xenobiotics, and endogenous compounds in various organs.
Mutations in Slc22 family members can cause diseases such as primary systemic carnitine deficiency or idiopathic renal hypouricemia, and may affect drug absorption or excretion.
Slc22A17, known as a receptor for Lipocalin 2, shows relatively high expression in hematopoietic stem cells.
