Target Information

Neuron specific enolase (NSE, also known as ENO1, ENO2, ENO3 or enolase α, β, γ) is an enzyme involved in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, catalyzing the conversion between 2-phosphoglycerate and phosphoenolpyruvate. NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and is released into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood upon neuronal injury.

NSE expression is primarily neuronal and neuroendocrine, while α-enolase is ubiquitous and β-enolase is muscle-specific. Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is typical in neuroendocrine neoplasms. Due to high energy demands, neurons are rich in glycolytic enzymes such as GAPDH and NSE.

Antibodies against NSE are valuable for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineages, and neuroendocrine cells. NSE release into CSF or blood serves as a biomarker for neuronal injury and is clinically used as a marker in neurological disorders such as stroke, hypoxic brain injury, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis. Elevated NSE levels are also associated with neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
