Target Information
CBS (Cystathionine beta-synthase) is the only known pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme that contains heme. It plays a crucial role in regulating hydrogen sulfide production, particularly in the brain, utilizing cysteine instead of serine to catalyze hydrogen sulfide formation. Hydrogen sulfide acts as a gasotransmitter with signaling and cytoprotective effects, including neuroprotection against hypoxic injury.
