Target Information
The insulin gene family, including insulin, relaxin, and insulin-like growth factors I and II (IGF-I and IGF-II), consists of structurally related polypeptides with divergent biological functions. IGF-I and IGF-II are critical regulators of cell proliferation and differentiation, mediating growth primarily through the IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR). IGF-I expression is regulated by growth hormone and supports postnatal growth, whereas IGF-II is induced by placental lactogen during prenatal development. IGF-II functions as a fetal growth factor and is abundantly expressed in placental trophoblasts. Variants in IGF-II and IGFBP1 genes are associated with metabolic changes induced by overfeeding. The human IGF-II gene is located on chromosome 11p15.5 and encodes a 180-amino-acid precursor protein.
