Target Information
Crystallins are divided into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class forms the major proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose their nuclei during development, and crystallins are retained throughout life, making them extremely stable. Mammalian lens crystallins are grouped into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma form a superfamily. Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, highly symmetrical proteins lacking connecting peptides and terminal extensions. They are differentially regulated after early development. Gamma-crystallin genes (gamma-A through gamma-D) and pseudogenes (gamma-E, gamma-F, gamma-G) exist as a tandem gene cluster. Mutations or aging affecting gamma-crystallins are associated with cataract formation.
