Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These proteins belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which arise from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant recognition and G protein-mediated signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and its nomenclature is organism-specific.
