Target Information
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter genes are involved in regulating dietary cholesterol retention in the body. The ABC transporter ABCG1 (ABC8) is expressed on the cell surface and within intracellular compartments of cholesterol-laden macrophages. It is induced in monocyte-derived macrophages during cholesterol influx mediated by acetylated low-density lipoprotein. Conversely, lipid efflux mediated by HDL(3) in cholesterol-laden macrophages suppresses ABCG1 expression.
