Target Information
The zinc transporter ZIP5 (SLC39A5) is a member of the divalent ion transporter family. Zinc is an essential ion for cellular growth, development, and differentiation. ZIP5 is closely related to ZIP4 and is expressed in tissues such as the intestine, pancreas, liver, and kidney. Unlike ZIP4, ZIP5 localizes to the basolateral membrane in kidney cells and is not downregulated by zinc repletion. Evidence suggests ZIP4 and ZIP5 are reciprocally regulated — ZIP5 mRNA translation decreases and ZIP5 protein is internalized and degraded under zinc deficiency.
