Target Information
The dynamins are a family of approximately 100 kDa GTPases transcribed from at least three separate genes. Multiple mRNA splice variants have been described for each dynamin. Dynamins contain conserved structural domains including:
- An amino-terminal GTPase domain
- A centrally located membrane-binding pleckstrin homology domain (PHD)
- A coiled-coil region preceding a proline-rich domain (PRD)
The PRD mediates interactions between dynamin and other cellular proteins.
Dynamin I is neuron-specific, dynamin II is ubiquitously expressed, and dynamin III is mainly expressed in brain, testis, heart, and lung.
These proteins play key roles in clathrin-mediated and fluid-phase endocytosis.
