Target Information
Natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes capable of lysing certain tumor and virus-infected cells without prior activation. They also regulate humoral and cell-mediated immunity. The encoded protein belongs to the killer cell lectin-like receptor (NKG2) family, a group of transmembrane proteins preferentially expressed in NK cells. These proteins have a type II membrane orientation and a C-type lectin domain. NKG2A forms a complex with KLRD1/CD94 and is involved in recognizing MHC class I HLA-E molecules in NK cells. The NKG2 gene family forms a receptor gene cluster on chromosome 12, with four alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding two distinct isoforms.
