- Specificity Comments: Spectrin is an actin-binding protein that forms a major component of the cytoskeletal superstructure of the erythrocyte plasma membrane. It determines membrane shape and deformability, functioning as a membrane organizer and stabilizer. Spectrins are composed of nonhomologous subunits, including Spectrin II, a neuronal cytoskeleton protein.
Target Information
SPTAN1 (spectrin alpha chain, non-erythrocytic 1) belongs to the spectrin family of filamentous cytoskeletal proteins. These proteins act as scaffolds that stabilize the plasma membrane and organize intracellular organelles. Spectrins form alpha and beta dimers that associate into tetramers linked head-to-head. SPTAN1 also participates in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. Mutations in SPTAN1 cause early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
