Target Information
The FH (Fumarase) protein is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle) and catalyzes the formation of L-malate from fumarate. It exists in both cytosolic and mitochondrial forms, differing in translation start sites. The mitochondrial form undergoes removal of the N-terminal extension to yield the same form as in the cytoplasm. FH functions as a homotetramer and is similar to thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations in FH can cause fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
