Target Information
Spectrins are a family of filamentous cytoskeletal proteins that function as essential scaffold proteins stabilizing the plasma membrane and organizing intracellular organelles. Spectrins form alpha and beta dimers that associate into tetramers linked head-to-head.
This gene encodes an alpha spectrin expressed in nonerythrocytic cells and involved in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. Mutations can cause early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
