Background
This gene belongs to the subfamily of ubiquitously expressed heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs). These nucleic acid-binding proteins form complexes with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA) and are involved in pre-mRNA processing, mRNA metabolism, and transport. Although hnRNPs are primarily nuclear, some shuttle between the nucleus and cytoplasm. The hnRNP D0 protein contains two quasi-RRM domains that bind RNA and localizes to both nucleus and cytoplasm. It plays a role in mRNA stability regulation. Alternative splicing yields four transcript variants.
