Background
Glutamate metabotropic receptor 6 (GRM6) is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor family. L-glutamate, the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, activates both ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors. Glutamatergic neurotransmission is essential for normal brain function and is implicated in various neuropathologic conditions.
Metabotropic glutamate receptors are divided into three groups based on sequence homology, signaling mechanisms, and pharmacologic properties.
- Group I: GRM1, GRM5 – activate phospholipase C
- Group II: GRM2, GRM3
- Group III: GRM4, GRM6, GRM7, GRM8 – linked to inhibition of the cyclic AMP cascade but differ in agonist selectivity
