Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio, in contrast to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL22 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the L22 ribosomal protein family. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene exists on chromosome 4q, and two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
