Background
Glutamate receptors are the predominant excitatory neurotransmitter receptors in the mammalian brain and are activated in various normal neurophysiologic processes. These receptors are heteromeric protein complexes forming ligand-gated ion channels. The subunit encoded by this gene belongs to the AMPA-sensitive glutamate receptor family and undergoes RNA editing (AGA→GGA; R→G). Alternative splicing results in different isoforms with distinct signal transduction properties. Certain haplotypes show a positive association with schizophrenia. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
