Background
The reversible posttranslational modification of proteins by SUMO proteins is essential for various biological processes. SENP3, a SUMO-specific protease, is involved in processing SUMO precursors to generate a C-terminal diglycine motif necessary for conjugation. It also exhibits isopeptidase activity, removing SUMO from high molecular mass conjugates (Di Bacco et al., 2006 [PubMed 16738315]; OMIM, Jun 2009).
